Today is known as Giving Tuesday, and on this day it is our greatest desire that you would consider giving to the women and girls of China. We are working with Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, an international coalition that opposes forced abortion and sexual slavery in China. Our goal is to raise public awareness regarding the coercive enforcement of China’s One Child Policy, the connection between this coercion and human trafficking in Asia, and the other human rights abuses that arise out of this coercive enforcement.

Female - The World War on Women is a documentary film addressing the various forms of violence and abuse suffered by women on every continent around the globe. While exploring personal stories illustrating an array of issues such as the feminization of poverty, gendercide, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and the objectification and exploitation of women, experts seek to identify the cultural mindsets and traditions that result in such human rights violations while activists offer hope of change through viable solutions.

Human rights issues as widespread as gendercide demand a worldwide response. To truly mobilize a global movement to see gendercide come to an end, people must be able to learn about the issue in their own language.

Before launching our screening campaign in 2012, we prioritized the translation of It's a Girl into several major languages including Spanish, French, Chinese and Hindi.

Nanveet is a high school student at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School. She attended GirlKIND's first event and screening of It's a Girl last September. She left the event feeling motivated and inspired. So much so, that she did an interactive presentation on the film and the issue of gendercide to her classmates, hoping to raise awareness and motivate others to react.

Nanveet is only 14 and has become an active member of GirlKIND. The following is Nanveet's personal blog about gendercide.

Yet another horrific story arises as the struggle on behalf of women and girls continues. In New Delhi, India, when the worried parents indiaof a missing 5-year-old child tried filing a missing person's report, the police ignored the parents and the case. After the child was kidnapped, two adult men held her hostage for two days while they repeatedly gang-raped the helpless girl. The men sexually tortured the 5-year-old, inserting candles and bottles into her private parts. When the callous men were done with her, they tried to strangle the child and fled the apartment where they held her captive.

UN Commission on the Status of Women image

Next week, governmental leaders from around the world are meeting in New York for the United Nation’s Commission on the Status ofWomen (UNCSW). This is the primary policy-making body on the planet when it comes to gender equality and women’s rights.

The theme this year is the elimination of violence against women and girls, and so we’ve been working hard with our partners to see It’s a Girl included in the two week event (4-15 March).

Several screenings of It’s a Girl are planned for the week, and they are all open to the public, so if you’re in New York or know any representatives of your organization in the area, please help us spread the word!
